Explorations into the Nature of Consciousness

Description:

Are you curious about conscious experience and what it is? Do we perceive and experience the world as it actually is or just a flawed representation of what actually exists? Did you ever wonder why many scientists and philosophers are moving away from materialist/physicalist position that consciousness is a biproduct of neuronal processing within brains of a certain threshold of complexity to one where consciousness is a fundamental and irreducible aspect of reality?

What are the alternative leading contemporary theories of the metaphysics of consciousness? What is the evidence for this change? Are these theories compatible with ancient eastern mystical traditions? What are the implications of a change in paradigms? For our health? For our ethics? For our mortality? For society?

By the way, what is consciousness? Can consciousness reside outside of brains? Does it survive bodily death? If so, what is it that survives? Can this state be experienced with hallucinogenic drugs or other means?

What is intuition? Are out-of-body experiences real? What about Psi phenomena? What does the savant syndrome tell us about the nature of consciousness.? What is consciousness like in animals? How far down the evolutionary ladder does it go? What is artificial consciousness?

We will explore these topics and much more in this discussion group. The group will meet via Zoom for 90 minutes every other week. Each session will begin with a 10–20-minute YouTube video from the world’s leading contemporary thinkers or short presentation by the host followed by Q & A and then a lively interactive discussion among the participants.

Host: Bob StaretzOne of the founders of the Groking Wholeness website and long term student and collaborator on consciousness studies.

When: every other Thursday at 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm EDT starting Sept. 25, 2025 for 10 sessions.

An Apple a Day (Improving Your Health)

Description:

Medical care in our society is designed to find problems, not to prevent them. Treatment is aimed at relieving symptoms, not finding the root cause and addressing that. Most doctors are trained to dispense a pill for any complaint, never to ask the basic questions that might address the underlying imbalance.

Holistic medicine looks at the whole patient - not only the body parts - in context. This might including lifestyle habits, nutrition and exercise, toxic exposures, beliefs about illness and healing, emotional issues, family and work influences, past experiences, good and bad, - and evaluating the health of the person in light of all that and more.

Dr Carol Roberts has practiced and taught holistic medicine for decades. She will open each meeting with a 30-45 minute talk, then take questions from participants.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Nature is the healer

  • Maintain your brain

  • Preparing for pregnancy

  • Hormone replacement therapy and quality of life

  • The changing cancer landscape

  • The basics of holestic self care

Host: Carol Roberts, M.D., one of the founders of Groking Wholeness will host this recurring event.

When: every  Saturday beginning Sept 13 from 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM

Where: Zoom

Fee: no charge

Registration: Go to our Contact Us page to sign-up. Mention the class title in the message box.  You will then be contacted directly via email with further details once plans are finalized..
