Cosmic Consciousness and Oneness

"A person experiences life as something separated from the rest - a kind of optical delusion of consciousness. Our task must be to free ourselves from this self-imposed prison, and through compassion, to find the reality of Oneness."

-Albert Einstein

Cosmic Consciousness

Cosmic Consciousness is the spiritual realization that refers to a higher state of being that can be experienced and practiced by any of us on a personal level. It is a state of expanded awareness and enlightenment embodying love, peace, compassion, wisdom, harmony and unity with all existence. It is also a state of consciousness that transcends the ego, selfishness, greed and materialistic concerns, our failings, our doubts and fears, and aligns all of us with the unity and Oneness (see below) of the Divine.

Cosmic Consciousness is accessible to anyone regardless of religious affiliation, tradition or formal religious practices. It has no spiritual leader, guru, or institution other than the enlightened self.  It is the realization of one's true nature as an aspect of Oneness, a state of metaphysical integration where the human and divine aspects within each of us are harmonized and integrated. It is not limited to any specific religion or religious practice but is the universal truth found at the core of most religious traditions, including Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, and indigenous mysticism. It is sometimes known as a state of samadhi or self-realization. It is the non-dualistic awareness that unites our inner subjective experiences, our consciousness, with our outer objective experiences.

While some may claim that this state can only be achieved only through a years-long practice of personal suffering and deep spiritual discipline, others believe that is can be obtained by embodiment of the practices of the great mystics and spiritual teachers of the ages such as Rumi, Jesus or Buddha. Some believe that it is buried deep within the psyche of us all just waiting to be accessed. Others believe that, if we are willing and with deep introspection, anyone of us can find our own path to achieving it.

However it is realized, practicing Cosmic Consciousness  is not a specific doctrine or teaching but a way of living, a deep recognition of the interconnectedness, interdependence and Divine Presence within the very core of our being.  It is the natural state of existence that can be awakened through practices like insight meditation, achieving alternate states of consciousnesss, use of psychedelics, by expanding awareness and even by intentional living.

Experiencing Cosmic Consciousness is surrendering to the Divine and experiencing a state of goodwill, of love, of knowing, of compassion and of integrity, where our ego fades and we experience a Oneness with each other and with all creation. Ultimately, it is a transcendent journey and the realization of our inherent divinity, oneness and interdependence with all that exists. The path to it is open to anyone willing to examine and cultivate unconditional love, truth, compassion and personal spiritual awakening, regardless of their prior religious affiliations or long-held unexamined beliefs.

Accepting Cosmic Consciousness as the recognition of a Oneness with all existence is one which doesn’t require a specific holiday to contemplate or to practice it. It is available to each of us 24/7 every day of our lives. How much nicer and kinder would the world be if we all practiced that every day and not just on special occasions?

Oneness

Oneness is the recognition and experience of unity underlying all diversity. It is a state of being within homo noeticus. It is both a mystical state of being and a guiding principle for ethical living. As a higher state of consciousness, it invites individuals to transcend egoic separateness and embrace their true nature as inseparable from the cosmos. This realization holds the potential to transform personal consciousness and foster universal peace by dissolving the illusions of division and separation. Oneness has long been a cornerstone in many spiritual traditions and philosophical systems, emphasizing that the multiplicity of forms and beings in the universe are expressions of a single underlying reality or cosmic consciousness.

Oneness is experienced as an intense sense of interconnectedness and unity with all life and all of nature. It is often described as a heart-opening awareness where the individual self dissolves into a greater whole, leading to feelings of vastness, fullness, love and completion. This state transcends the ego and personality, revealing the true nature of the Self as inseparable from the universe itself. Terms like Non-Dual Awareness, Unity, Buddha-Nature, Christ-Consciousness, and Enlightenment are often used to describe this experience.

Oneness implies the singularity or uniqueness of reality. Despite the diversity and multiplicity observed in the world, there is ultimately only one reality or divine essence that pervades everything. This is articulated in the Upanishads, ancient Hindu scriptures, which declare that the same divine soul (Atman) exists in every being, making all life one unified whole. The Svetasvatara Upanisad states, "Only one divine soul prevails among all the creatures," and the Brhadraranyaka Upanisad echoes that the divine soul present in oneself is also present in everyone else. This philosophical stance fosters a vision of universal unity that transcends differences of religion, race, or culture, promoting peace and harmony.

Oneness carries significant ethical and social implications. Recognizing that all beings and all of nature are interconnected encourages cooperation, inclusion, compassion, and the pursuit of the common good over individual selfishness. It is the antithesis of individualism and materialism which are the root sources of conflict and suffering. Instead it advocates for a life lived in harmony with the whole: all living beings, society, nature and the entire cosmos . Oneness implies that harming others ultimately harms oneself, as all are part of the same living superorganism.
